You don’t always need a complete budget overhaul to start saving money — sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference. Here are 3 simple, real-life ways I’ve personally saved money without giving up the things I enjoy.

1. Plan Your Meals and Stick to a Budget

I used to nip into Morrisons or Asda “just for a few things” and somehow walk out £20 poorer — and that wasn’t even my main shop. The real issue? I never knew what I wanted to eat, so I overbought or ordered takeaway.

Now, I plan our meals weekly, shop at Aldi, and mostly stick to non-branded products. For a family of four, I now spend around £120 a week on groceries — a massive improvement. I still go to other supermarkets occasionally for specific items, and I’ve also started bulk-buying things like loo roll on TikTok Shop, which has added to the savings.

2. Audit Your Subscriptions

Subscriptions sneak up on you. At one point, I was paying for Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple Music (twice!), Netflix, Apple TV, PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass, and Paramount+.

Here’s what I did:

  • Cancelled Disney+ — I wasn’t using it

  • Cut gaming subs — I wasn’t gaming much

  • Found out Apple TV is free through my Barclays account

  • Switched to a family Apple Music plan, saving £5/month since my wife and I were paying separately

  • Got Netflix via Sky TV for £5/month

  • Grabbed a Paramount+ annual deal for £35

Just being intentional saved me a decent chunk each month — without really missing anything.

3. Renegotiate Your TV Package

I love watching football and F1, so Sky TV was one of the few luxuries I was willing to pay for — but I was still shocked to realise I was paying £120/month just for TV.

I found out I was out of contract, called Sky to see what they could offer, and got an initial discount to £95/month. Still too much. I researched NOW TV’s £30/month sports package, and called Sky again to cancel. Suddenly, they offered a £64/month deal for 24 months — same channels, same setup, £56/month saved.

Final Thoughts

These changes didn’t feel like sacrifices — just smarter decisions. If you're looking for realistic, UK-specific ways to save without feeling restricted, start with these. The savings build up faster than you’d think.
